John Locke believed that individuals have certain rights-life, liberty and property-which belong to them in their capacity as human beings, regardless of State laws. After Locke's natural rights are governed by the law of nature and are known through reason, together with the fact that others may not be given or taken away from others. If we have inalienable rights to life, liberty and property, how can apply state taxes under laws voted on by a majority? Isn't this tantamount to taking someone's property without the consent of or? Locke's response is that when we choose to live in a certain society, we implicitly consent that we will comply with laws voted on by a majority of taxation.
