The military strategy of “depth defense” is defined as protecting an objective with the help of a large number of defense lines which are becoming stronger and stronger. As the attack advances, it will become vulnerable and, at least, will be neutralized through encirclement.
Richard Weaver is drawing a parallel between defense in depth and the idea of separation of power: in face of a terrible opponent, as the federal state, we have to put new political authorities, local authorities or other organizations. This represents also the practical mean through which the conservatives succeed in protecting the individual freedom. On the other hand, the liberal individualist theoreticians, as Weaver states, adopt the ineffective technique of strengthening the last defense line, forgetting that they actually make way for the opponents’ advance. They, as Richard Weaver dares to say, are not even true individualists.
